Farming

Once the steel blade of a plow cut into the virgin prairie grass, the face of northwest North Dakota was forever changed.  The pioneers who settled in and around Bowbells did not have an easy lot changing the age-old prairie into productive farmland.

Drought, prairie fires, grasshopper infestations, summer hail storms, winter blizzards and the threat of disease all bore down hard.  By the late 1800's the settlers had won and the prairie surrendered her bounty to the nation - becoming today's bread basket of the world.

Todays farmers do the work of many men using large modern machinery to produce a variety of crops such as flax, canola, peas, barley, oats, sunflowers, durum and hard red spring wheat.  The picture below was taken in September, 2003  in Bowbells. This pile contains over 220,000 bushels of Hard Red Spring Wheat.
